Metalsmithing

Farrier-craftsman William Kuegel has been shoeing horses since 1973. In 1977 he and his wife Lynn first used horseshoe nails to create a line of unique handmade ornaments. William now designs jewelry, ornaments, and sculpture using horseshoe nails as well as other metals. He draws upon his years of experience with horses as inspiration for much of his work. Current designs incorporate a wide variety of styles and techniques.

William and Lynn operate their business, called Equicraft, out of their home in Lee, NH. Their unique line of horseshoe nail jewelry includes both a trotting horse and rocking horse pin, as well as pins depicting a dog, moose, dove, angel, and traditional cross.

Their horseshoe nail snowflake ornaments make perfect gifts for equine enthusiasts. Miniaturists will delight in William's sculptural scenes, which utilize horseshoe nails and other metals. These are ideal for tabletop or shelf display.

A horseshoe nail is surprisingly complex. Each of its four sides is different. These differences can be used to create subtle variations in visual effect. Another variation is incorporating the head of the nail into the design, or using only the tapered shank of the nail. As equine jewelry or sculpture, horseshoe nails possess an unexpected beauty that will provide years of enjoyment.
