All types of metal appeal to farrier-craftsman
William Kuegel. He began his metalsmithing career shoeing horses
after graduating from the University of New Hampshire (1974)
and Mid-South Academy of Horseshoeing. In 1977 he and his wife
Lynn first used horseshoe nails to create a line of unique hand-made
ornaments.
The ornaments were shop-juried
through the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen at the Sharon Arts
Center in 1979 and in the Exeter Craft Center in 1981 (state-juried
in 1999). In December 1981 they were featured in Yankee Magazine's
Small Business and Crafts section. One of their trees was chosen
to be the 1996 Holiday Ornament by the Society for the Protection
of New Hampshire Forests. Most recently, they were winners of
the year 2000 League of NH Craftsmen Annual Ornament Contest.
Over the years their body of work
has expanded to include individual small-scale sculptural works,
scenes, and jewelry. Instead of designing solely with horseshoe
nails, William now works with a variety of metals. The designs
are open - in the style of line drawings - with small solid elements.
Lynn's background is in interior
design and business. She and William collaborate to design the
pieces, then William crafts the pieces while Lynn manages the
business. They operate their business - called Equicraft because
of the equine connection - out of their home in Lee, New Hampshire.
